Gemstone of the week:Peridot

February 24, 2011

Peridot

Peridot is one of the few semi-precious gemstone that only comes in one colour: a lovely yellow-green shade. Ancient Greeks refered to Peridot as “The evening emerald” as is sparkles a brilliant green colour when light is shone on it.  Many stones thought to be emerald actually turned out to be Peridot!

Peridot is the gemstone of August. In ancient times, St Johns Island in the red sea was a major source of Peridot. Peridot is also found in New mexico, China, U.S.A, Burma, and Pakistan.  Peridot is mentioned in the bible in its hebrew name “pitdah”. Who know it might have been used in decorating the ancient temples in the bible.Strange but true; ground Peridot was used in the treatment of asthma, though I cannot vouch for its effectiveness.

Enjoy the brilliance of Peridot!
